Julius Gutowski

Bio

Julius Paul Gutowski was born in 1931, the son of Ardella Jean McKillip and Julius Paul Gutowski Sr. Julius Jr., best known as Jay, went to La Jolla High School. His father was a Navy veteran of both WW I and WW II. Young Jay followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the Navy during the Korean War.

After his military service, Jay married his high school sweetheart, Ardella Jean McKillip, in San Diego in 1952. They had three children, daughter Jana and sons Wayne and Paul.

In 1953 Julius began college by enrolling at San Diego State where he was a star football player and earned All-American awards through his abilities on offense and defense.  Jay was known for his fierce competitive nature.

By 1963, Jay was hired as Assistant Football Coach under legendary Head Coach Don Coryell. In 1967 Jay was appointed as Instructor to teach Physical Education. He also would become Assistant Baseball Coach under another legendary Head Coach, Jim Dietz. Jay taught a variety of physical activity courses, including volleyball, wrestling, swimming, & golf. Jay served on the faculty for nearly 25 years. He retired in 1991 and was given Emeritus status as Assistant Professor of Physical Education.

Jay lived with his wife Della in their home in Lakeside, CA near San Diego until his death at age 75 in 2007. His wife Della passed away two years later in 2009.

Jay was honored posthumously by being elected to the San Diego State Aztec Hall of Fame in 2007 for his Football stardom between 1953-56 and his accomplishments as Assistant Football and Baseball Coach.
