Zoe Anderson Stout

Bio

Zoe Anderson was born in the state of Illinois, the youngest of many children of Mary Judith Reed and Frederick Reade Anderson. Zoe also had one younger sister who was adopted. Father Frederick was a high school English teacher.

By 1940 Zoe had received her Bachelor’s degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology and, at age 27, was a public school teacher in West Frankfort, Franklin, Illinois. Later Zoe went to graduate school at the University of Illinois, where she received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Nutrition.

Zoe was appointed Assistant Professor at San Diego State College in 1965 to teach nutrition in what was then the Department of Home Economics. She was age 52. She was the first Ph.D. in Nutrition hired in the Department. Before that time, faculty who taught food and nutritional sciences courses had Masters degrees. Zoe taught lower division and upper division undergraduate courses and graduate level nutrition courses. She also served as chair of Masters degree student theses. Zoe served for 12 years (1965-1977) and rose to the rank of Associate Professor of Family Studies and Consumer Sciences, the name of the Department/School at that time.

Zoe E. Anderson married Herald Franklin Stout, a retired U.S. Navy Admiral, and widower, in July 1976, one year before her retirement in 1977. Admiral Stout had children and grandchildren from his first marriage. Zoe’s married name was Zoe Anderson Stout.

When she retired in 1977, SDSU Catalogs identified her as Zoe E. Stout, Emeritus Associate Professor of Family Studies and Consumer Sciences.

Zoe and husband Herald Stout enjoyed ten years of retirement in San Diego before his death in 1987. Zoe lived until 1998 when she passed away in San Diego.
