Evelyn Lockman

Bio

Evelyn Elizabeth Lockman was a native of Tennessee, the daughter of Mansell Brooks and William B. Lockman. Her father worked as a barber and salesman.

Evelyn was a graduate (B.A. degree) of Vanderbilt and of George Peabody College (M.A. degree). She began her career as a faculty member and Chair of the Dance Department at Southwest Louisiana.

She was appointed as Assistant Professor of Physical Education at San Diego State in 1948. She had a long and productive career. She was an expert in Dance and instrumental in developing the Dance program at SDSU. She was a well-respected dancer and involved with international organizations. She was promoted to the rank of Professor during her career.

Evelyn taught at SDSU for 30 years, retiring in 1977 as Emeritus Professor of Physical Education.

She was founding President of the National Dance Association. She served on the dance committee for the 1986 Asian Games and the Korean Olympic Committee for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea.

Evelyn lived out her life in San Diego. She died on 30 Aug 1991 at the age of 81.
