Beverly Ann Smith

Bio

Beverly Ann Smith was born and raised in Pennsylvania. She attended West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1962. She was active in sports and was Director of Women’s Intramurals in her senior year. She was also a leader on the College Women’s House Governing Board. Beverly went on to graduate school at Ohio University where she received a Master of Science degree in 1964.

In Fall 1968 Beverly was appointed Assistant Professor at San Diego State in the Department of Physical Education. She taught in the areas of professional preparation in physical education, student teaching, supervision, and physical activity. For many years she was the primary Instructor of PE 190 (Skill Competency in Physical Education), which was taught for PE majors to ensure they demonstrated competence in a wide variety of physical activities.

Beverly made many service contributions to her department. She was member and Chair of the Professional Education Committee, member and Chair of the Personnel Committee, a member of the Advisory Committee, and a member of the Auxiliary Committee. Beverly was also a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). She was a long time sponsor of the State Physical Education Club, an outstanding student organization in the department.

Beverly retired in 1996 as Emeritus Assistant Professor of Exercise & Nutritional Sciences. An article honoring Beverly was written by colleague Dr. Rebecca Quinn in the ENS Newsletter of May 1996.

Soon after retirement, Beverly moved to the state of Maine where she enjoyed her retirement years. Beverly passed away on March 14, 2015, at the age of 74.
