Bio
Dr. Amanda C. McClain is an Associate Professor of Nutrition in the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at SDSU, Director of the Food Access Research for Equity in Nutrition research lab, and a Core Investigator in the SDSU Institute for Behavioral and Community Health. Dr. McClain uses population science and community-engaged research methods, including mixed methods, to answer real-world/applied research questions, particularly among Hispanic/Latino communities. Her research seeks to 1) understand the biobehavioral pathways linking food and nutrition insecurity to psychosocial, cardiometabolic, and aging outcomes, and 2) reduce health inequities through multi-level, capacity-oriented behavior change interventions, embedded within existing infrastructure (e.g., federally qualified health centers, food assistance programs) and aimed at improving food and nutrition security, dietary intake, and cardiometabolic risk.
Dr. McClain’s research is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). She serves as a Steering Committee member for the USDA Nutrition Hub at Texas A&M and as Co-Chair of the Research and Data Excellence subcommittee for the San Diego Live Well Center for Innovation and Leadership (LWCIL). She also provides advisory and evaluation support for Project New Village, a BIPOC-led grassroots nonprofit promoting food sovereignty in the historically marginalized area of Southeastern San Diego.
