Passing of Emeritus Professor Edward P. Franz
Dr. Edward Franz was born in St. Louis, MO. He earned B.S. and M.A. degrees from Washington University in St. Louis. He started in the Department of Physical Education at San Diego State College in 1965, where he taught courses in movement skills, musculoskeletal fitness, and gymnastics. Dr. Franz was the Head Men’s Gymnastics Coach for 15 years and Head Women’s Gymnastics Coach for 20 years at SDSU.
Dr. Franz was committed to university and community service. In 1965, he founded the SDSU Aztec Gymnastics Program, which served hundreds of children and youth from the local community for 41 years. He was the program director and was responsible for offering classes and hosting competitive regional and national gymnastics competitions. This program also served as a vital feeder for master’s thesis and special projects for students and faculty.
Dr. Franz retired from SDSU in 2008. In addition to his noteworthy contributions to the San Diego community, he published books on weight training and gymnastics.
