Advising FAQ

Which major is best for me?

If you are interested in becoming a personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach, occupational therapist, athletic trainer, or exercise physiologist, Fitness Specialist is the best major for you. The Pre PT major is geared towards students who plan on becoming a physical therapist, physician’s assistant, medical doctor, veterinarian, or chiropractor. Please visit Health Professions Advising Office for more information.
How to move into upper division status?

You will automatically be moved into upper division status upon completion of ALL “major prep” coursework, as long as you have met impaction criteria (2.9 GPA, Kinesiology: C or better in ENS 200 and BIOL 212, Nutrition: C or better in CHEM 100 and CHEM 130).

How do I read my degree audit?

Please refer to the degree evaluation guide to learn to read your degree audit.

How can I get help planning my schedule?

Your first stop for schedule planning should be your degree audit, major MAPs, and your coordinated care advisors. If further assistance is needed, please contact ensugrad@sdsu.edu.

Do I need to take the WPA?

The WPA has been suspended as of Summer 2022. All students will need to take an upper division writing course to fulfill the requirement.

Can I take a study abroad alternative course instead of traveling?

Study abroad alternative courses have been approved through May 2023. Any course from this list of alternative class options will fulfill the international requirement. After completion of a course from the list, you will need to email studyabroad@sdsu.edu to clear the requirement from your degree audit.

Which classes can I take for CR/NC?

All major coursework MUST be taken for a letter grade. General education courses may be taken for Credit/No Credit. A grade of Credit (CR) is awarded for work equivalent to a course letter grade of C (2.0) or better. No Credit (NC) is awarded for work equivalent to all grades, which earn less than 2.0 grade points (C- through F).

I started the Pre-PT major with CHEM 100, what are my options to catch up?

For Pre PT students who started with CHEM 100, we recommend you complete a science lecture and lab over summer, either at SDSU or at a community college. Some common options include PHYS 180A+182A, BIOL 203+L, and CHEM 201.

How do I find community college course equivalents?

Any lower division course (0-299 level) can be taken at a community college. Check Transfer Admission Planner to find course equivalents.
