ENS’ History

Discover the school’s 100 years of rich history!

group photo
Early faculty member Dr. Kasch (center) founded San Diego’s first cardiac rehabilitation program in 1964.

The School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences began as two separate deparments, Physical Education, and Foods and Nutrition, with the founding of San Diego State Normal School in 1897.

Classes were taught at the University Heights location in fall 1899. Because the mission of a “normal” school was to prepare students to become elementary and middle school teachers, the early beginnings of our programs were predominantly female instructors and female students.
