Emeritus, In Memoriam

Florence Patricia Cullen was a native of the state of Illinois. Her parents were Margaret Lackland Clark and James Underwood Cullen. She had one sister (Marietta) and two brothers (Joe and George).

She chose to use her middle name most of her life. Pat received her college and advanced degrees from Illinois State (B.S.), Iowa State (M.A.) and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). She was employed by the Physical Education Department at the University of Illinois while working for her doctorate, which she completed in 1964.

Pat was appointed Assistant Professor of Physical Education at San Diego State in 1964 and served for over 20 years. In addition to teaching, she served for one year as Chair of the Physical Education for Women Department. Over the years Patricia was promoted to the rank of Professor. She retired in 1985 as Professor Emeritus of Physical Education.

She spent her retirement years in San Diego. Pat died on October of 2007 at the age of 84.

As a legacy, her estate established the F. Patricia Cullen Scholarship at the University of Illinois, providing financial aid support to undergraduate students in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health. The Patricia Cullen Scholarship for undergraduate students in physical education was also established at San Diego State after her retirement in 1985.
