About the Program
Students will complete a 63-unit degree program including two summer semesters and four traditional semesters. Students will complete both academic and clinical experiences leading to eligibility for the Board of Certification Examination. The MSAT will prepare students for entry-level practice by integrating the professional competence domains and didactic knowledge and clinical skills with a value system that will promote success as an entry-level athletic trainer. It will expose students to diverse clinical education settings and other educational experiences that foster professional development and networking. Students will be actively involved in research and evidence-based practice as well as leadership opportunities consistent with high ethical and moral standards. The MSAT will foster interprofessional education and interdisciplinary practice techniques and enable students develop cultural competency through the appreciation and respect of all individuals.
History of the Program
Today, the SDSU Athletic Training Program is its own Master of Science in Athletic Training degree program with 63-unit degree courses and accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The program supports up to 36 students (18 per cohort) annually across 20-plus affiliated clinical sites with over 50 clinical preceptors. The Athletic Training program has graduated over 1,500 students. It is a primary provider of athletic trainers to the local community, with our graduates employed at universities, community colleges, secondary schools, professional sports, industrial settings, military settings, and clinics both regionally and across the nation.
